MEMORIAL OF SAINT SCHOLASTICA, VIRGIN

On February 10th, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Scholastica, Virgin. Saint Scholastica (480-547) was born at Norcia, a small village in the Italian province of Umbria. Along with her brother, Saint Benedict, she consecrated her life to God, founded a monastic order for women, and followed her brother to the monastery at Monte Cassino. Saint Scholastica is venerated as the patroness of religious women and children suffering from epilepsy.

MYSTERIES OF THE JESUS PRAYER

In "Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer: Experiencing the Presence of God and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of an Ancient Spirituality", Professor Norris J. Chumley travels to some of Christianity's holiest sites and reveals the history, practice, and abiding wisdom of this ancient mystical tradition. In this wonderful new book (and accompanying film), Chumley shares his remarkable journey and the tradition of prayer that can help all of us create an unceasing and ever-deepening connection with God.

All adult parishioners are invited to join the Lent Book club. A free-will donation of $30.00 per person is requested and includes a hardcover copy of the book, along with a great cup of coffee or tea! SACRAMENT OF FIRST PENANCE & RECONCILIATION

Saturday, March 10th at 11:00am (Upper Church)

On Saturday, March 1oth, the second grade students in our youth faith formation program will participate in our annual First Penance & Reconciliation Service. Father Shea, our pastor, will preside.

This blessed and special event offers our second graders a unique opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation (Confession) for the first time. Although the Sacrament will be available only to our students during this event, all parents, grandparents, families, and friends are welcome to attend.

Parishioners are reminded that all are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 5:00pm until 5:30pm; on Saturday afternoons from 3:00pm until 3:30pm; and by appointment.

As our students continue their preparations to receive their First Holy Communion on Sunday, April 15th, please pray for them, their families, and our catechists. YOUTH FAITH FORMATION UPDATE

Classes Resume: Week of Sunday, February 26th

The Center for Faith Formation at Saint Charles Borromeo offers youth faith formation classes for children in grades 1 through 9, including preparation for the Sacraments of First Penance, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. During the weeks of Sunday, February 12th and Sunday February 19th, there are no classes scheduled. All classes, grades 1 through 8, will resume during the week of Sunday, February 26th in the parish center (weather permitting).

For updated information about weather cancelations during the cold and snowy winter months, please visit our blog; call us at 781-933-7595; or tune to local radio and television stations. If you would like to be notified by e-mail, please contact Cliff Garvey at c_garvey@rcabcuria.org.

All are welcome to join us for Lent Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours on Wednesday, February 29th at 7:00pm in the Parish Center's Chapel (second floor).

The Liturgy of the Hours is often called the "Divine Office" or the "Prayer of the Church" because so many people all over the world (priests, deacons, nuns, and also countless lay people) use this traditional form of prayer to sanctify or "make holy" the various "hours" of the day: morning, daytime, evening, and night.

Evening Prayer is a beautiful way to sanctify the end of a workday by praying the psalms and scriptures in communion with others here at Saint Charles Borromeo and throughout the world. It's also a great way to meet and pray with fellow parishioners! All are welcome!

On leaving the synagogue,

Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew

with James and John.

Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.

They immediately told him about her.

He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.

Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset,

they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.

The whole town was gathered at the door.

He cured many who were sick with various diseases,

and he drove out many demons,

not permitting them to speak because he knew him.

Rising very early before dawn,

he went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.

Simon and those who were with him pursued him

and on finding him said, "Everyone is looking for you."

FOURTH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

MEMORIAL OF SAINT BLAISE, BISHOP & MARTYR

On February 3rd, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. Little is known about the life of Saint Blaise. We believe that he served as Bishop of Sebastea in Armenia; and that he was martyred for the faith during the early fourth century. Saint Blaise is revered as the patron of throat illnesses because tradition holds that he healed a boy who was choking on a fishbone. This healing is commemorated by the blessing of throats on this day.

MEMORIAL OF SAINT JOHN BOSCO

On January 31st, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint John Bosco, Priest. John Bosco was born near Turin, Italy in 1815. He survived an impoverished childhood, but was eventually ordained a priest. His ministry was devoted to the education of young people and their Christian formation. He died in 1888.

Earlier this month, after four months of prayer, study, and service, sixty-four high school students from our faith community's youth faith formation program received the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Charles Borromeo.

This year, each of our newly confirmed fellow parishioners were presented with a gift copy of the Holy Bible. Week of Sunday, January 29th: Regular Class Schedule

The Center for Faith Formation at Saint Charles Borromeo offers youth faith formation classes for children in grades 1 through 9, including preparation for the Sacraments of First Penance, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. During the week of Sunday, January 29th, all classes, grades 1 through 8, will meet as scheduled in the parish center (weather permitting).

MEMORIAL OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

Saint Thomas Aquinas

On January 28th, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church. Thomas was born into the noble Aquino family in approximately 1225. He studied first at Monte Cassino, then at Naples. Later, as a member of the Dominican Order, he completed his theological studies at Paris and Cologne. He was tutored by Saint Albert the Great. Thomas Aquinas is remembered and venerated as an outstanding teacher and writer of philosophy and sacred theology; and for his devotion to the Holy Eucharist. He died in 1274.

Today's Scripture

A Reading from the Book of Wisdom:

O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy,

who have made all things by your word,

and by your wisdom have formed man

to have dominion over the creatures you have made,

and rule the world in holiness and righteousness,

and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul,

give me the wisdom that sits by your throne,

and do not reject me from among your servants.

For I am your slave

and the son of your maidservant,

a man who is weak and short-lived,

with little understanding of judgment and laws;

for even if one is perfect among the sons of men,

yet without the wisdom that comes from you,

he will be regarded as nothing.

With you is wisdom, who knows your works,

and was present when you made the world,

and who understands what is pleasing in your sight

and what is right according to your commandments.

Send her forth from the holy heavens,

and from the throne of your glory and send her,

MEMORIAL OF SAINT ANGELA MERICI

Saint Angela Merici, Virgin

On January 27th, the Catholic Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Angela Merici, Virgin. Angela Merici was born in approximately 1470 in Brescia, a region in northern Italy. She took vows with the Third Order of Saint Francis. In 1535, she founded the Ursulines, a society of women dedicated to the teaching of poor girls. Angela Merici died in 1540. Saint Angela Merici is venerated as patroness of the sick, of those living with disabilities, and of orphaned children.

Today's Scripture

A Reading from the Gospel of Mark:

Jesus said to the crowds:

"This is how it is with the Kingdom of God;

it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land

and would sleep and rise night and day

and the seed would sprout and grow,

he knows not how.

Of its own accord, the land yields fruit,

first the blade, then the ear,

then the full grain in the ear.

And when the grain is ripe,

he wields the sickle at once,

for the harvest has come."

He said,

"To what shall we compare the kingdom of God,

or what parable can we use for it?

It is like a mustard seed that,

when it is sown in the ground,

is the smallest of all the seeds of the earth.

But once it is sown, it springs up

and becomes the largest of plants

and puts forth large branches,

so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade."

With man such parables, he spoke the word to them

as they were able to understand it.

Without parables, he did not speak to them,

but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.

(Mark 4:26-34)
